$100M Investment in Thermal Energy Networks at Empire State Plaza
Coalition Praises Governor Hochul’s Decarbonization Move, Creating Skilled Trades Jobs for Years to Come
Albany, NY – July 20, 2024 – In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable energy, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $100 million funding initiative to support the decarbonization of Empire State Plaza in Albany. This strategic investment, hailed by the Clean Energy Jobs Coalition, aims to advance New York State's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a greener, more sustainable energy infrastructure.
The Empire State Plaza Energy Infrastructure Master Plan outlines a comprehensive approach to modernize the Plaza's energy systems. Phase 3 of the plan includes the development of thermal energy networks, leveraging heat recovery chillers and other advanced technologies to significantly lower heating and cooling demands.
John Murphy, International Representative for the United Association, stated, "This funding is a testament to New York's leadership in embracing innovative energy solutions. The decarbonization of Empire State Plaza will serve as a model for similar projects across the nation, showcasing our commitment to a sustainable future. Governor Hochul's bold vision and decisive action in prioritizing sustainable energy is truly commendable. Her leadership is not only paving the way for a greener future but also creating family sustainable jobs for New Yorkers."
The thermal energy networks proposed in the Master Plan are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, ensuring a smooth transition to more energy-efficient systems. The plan's emphasis on lower temperature hot water systems and heat recovery technologies highlights New York's commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.
Greg Lancette, President of the NYS Pipe Trades Association, added, "We applaud Governor Hochul's vision and implementation of a ‘Just Transition’ toward environmental sustainability. This initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also creates jobs and strengthens our infrastructure. The Empire State Plaza project is a win-win for New York State. This project will provide significant employment opportunities for union workers, further boosting our economy."
With an estimated total cost of $800 million to $1 billion for Phase 3, the project's scale underscores its significance in the state's broader decarbonization strategy. The $100 million funding from Governor Hochul marks a critical first step in facilitating a smooth transition to a clean energy future.
